Mid-Autumn Festival
This year Mid-Autumn Festival, or Lantern Festival as i call it, was an interesting experience. It made me reminisce of childhood days celebrating it with all my neighborhood friends. What exited us most like every other child was to be able to "play" with fire and be able to light as many candles as possible. We'd proudly carry our lanterns and tour the neighborhood ending it at the playground behind our house burning candles and playing with wax beneath the playground bench.
I realise kids have not changed as much as i think they have. It made me smile watching them today having exactly the same fun as i did almost 17 yrs ago.
Joakim asked me of the significance of the Chinese celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival. Shamefully i had no clue! It was just fun so who cares why! So i came home to google the reason and as i predicted it was a harvesting celebration.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the two most important holidays in the Chinese calendar (the other being the Chinese Lunar New Year), and is a legal holiday in several countries. Farmers celebrate the end of the summer harvesting season on this date. Traditionally, on this day, Chinese family members and friends will gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and eat moon cakes and pomeloes together.
It's always interesting to learn of other cultures and join in! So this year mostly because i wanted Joakim to experience it as well, we "celebrated" it twice, once at Tur's office with Tur, Sam, Lippy, Queen & Woei Na and the next day at the courtyard of our apartment with all our neighbours. *of which we got to meet more of today.
